A noisy miscellany features jokes about a greenhorn in the East River, wordplay on fatherly refusal, and quirks of language. A letter from Wasasa on April 16 1954 recounts family illnesses deaths losses including a son and a horse. It describes heavy rains and five inch snow, delaying agricultural work and prompting reflections on fortune and future prospects. Local neighbors pursue fruit and gardening amidst enduring misfortunes.

Wentworth, representing Chicago in Congress, dodges a direct vote on Douglas Nebraska bill. He says he will take an open bold stand and will neither vote for nor against the measure, avoiding any dodge of responsibility.
