Heroic Indiana Sergeant Harry Fisk Returns From Prison

A letter from the 7th Indiana Regiment reports Sergeant Harry Fisk from Co. A escaping from Lynchburg with three companions and returning with captured colors. Fisk sewed the 29th Ohio flag inside his jacket, escaped with others after a night of watch, traversed about forty miles, and reached Virginia’s Sperryville with the unit’s flags soon to be delivered. The regiment extols Fisk as a hero and urges more drafted comrades to join the fight to end the rebellion.

Battle near Cunperrer Court House leaves heavy losses

A Confederate letter from Cunperrer Court House dated August 11 1862 reports a severe battle the day before with about 500 total killed wounded or missing. Two brigades clashed, night skirmishes continued, several named soldiers wounded or missing, and both sides positioned within gun range awaiting further engagement as temperatures stay high and local fatalities rise.

Death of Marmaduke Green in action near Fredericksburg

From the Third Indiana Cavalry we report Marmaduke Green killed August 6 near Fredericksburg. He joined as a stranger, but his brave, humane conduct earned wide respect and he served as an orderly to Gen. Sullivan until his death while delivering a message through heavy fire.

Legal Tender Imp ortant Decision in Philadelphia Court

In Philadelphia District Court a ruling on Shoenberger for use vs Musselman and Watts held United States notes valid tender for bond payment due May 1 1862. The defendants offered gold and silver, but the court set aside the writ after finding the congressional act made U S notes a legal tender.
