A speaker recalls loving a girl whose motherly life and a future with another man shaped his longing. He remembers the maple tree moment and banshees of time as a cherubic chorus stirs his heart. Now a new mother and her child awaken a renewed duty and love for another’s boy.
A mixture of verse about longing and fidelity reflects a diaristic emotional tone. The text shifts to a Civil War anecdote describing two Federal soldiers captured by rebels in Tennessee, recaptured, exchanged, and returned to the Confederate army with Morgan's guerrillas, then escaping to rejoin their units. Also includes a tavern crowd quip about the stubbornness of a hen amid a Dutch tale and a court question in Washington, D. C., about Confederate money and its legal status.
A fervent patriotic piece tracing the history of freedom from ancient oppression to the American struggle, praising republican ideals, denouncing slavery, and urging dedication to the Union. It recounts scenes of sacrifice at Valley Forge and the cost of liberty, urging perseverance until victory.
When a person sustains a four-nail or sharp iron wound, use a common smoking pipe filled with tobacco lighted and blow smoke through the stem into the wound using a cloth handkerchief to cover the bowl. Two or three pipefuls will cause the wound to discharge. if days have passed since injury it will reopen.
Despite damage from midge and rust in parts of the crop the International Wheat Show will be held in Rochester New York on September 8 9 and 10 1963 with a world wide competition. Premiums total five hundred forty dollars and seed quality is emphasized. A public auction closes the event and distant entrants may send wheat by mail for entry.
The Genesee Farmer notes the need for an early high quality white wheat to avoid midge injury, aiming for a variety as good as Soules and as early as the Mediterranean. If found, it may be shown at the Great International Wheat Show in Rochester on September 8 to 10, 1863. such a wheat could be worth millions in Western New York. The Lafayette Courier reports two Copperhead brothers born within four weeks, both 46, and notes a Yank improves ducks by swimming in hot water, yielding boiled eggs.
