In this excerpt the author describes three wolf species Gray, Black, and Prairie in Illinois, recounting historical ranges, behavior, and hunts. The Black wolf is seen as more formidable. Prairie wolves hunt in packs on the prairies near Chicago, with hunting scenes involving many dogs and riders. The narrator also recalls a Mississippi River voyage aboard the Emerald with navigators Baldwin and Purcell, a captain who kissed daughters hello, and a baboon incident in April 1860.
