Iowa Weather Crop Bulletin Highlights Strong Growth

The past week brought near record warmth with rainfall scarce in the north and east and heavy in the southwest. Corn made very good progress and most of the earliest corn is safe from frost, seed corn ready for gathering, and silage and fodder cutting begun. Crop condition is good though drought trimmed yields in northern and eastern counties. Fall plowing and seeding for winter wheat and rye advance where rainfall is sufficient. Alfalfa seeding and cuttings progress across the western half. Sugar beets yield reduced by drought in some areas but beet quality remains good for sugar. Sorg hum cutting and grinding ongoing while late potatoes suffer from dry heat in northern counties.
