The drought damaged pastures, potatoes, garden crops, and water supply, but corn largely matured enough to avoid frost injury and hay yields remained strong. Weather notes claim revival of fall plowing and a generally profitable season despite heavy planting rains.

Suggestions For Gathering And Storing Seed Corn
Iowa State College at Ames advises counties to share detailed seed corn saving practices for local farmers. It covers timing for gathering in late September to October, selecting well ripened ears from sturdy stock, and tying ears in strings for ventilation. Storage emphasizes hanging on wires in dry ventilated spaces with open windows, avoiding heat, dampness, or direct sun, and using attic or dry rooms to prevent germ damage.

Properly Drying and Storing Seed Corn Instructions
The instructions detail selecting uniform stalk height, gathering ears into sacks, and tying 15 to 20 ears per string. Ears are hung to dry on wires in a well ventilated room, not in pig pens, barns, or outdoors, with windows kept open except during storms. Do not use artificial heat and save larger seed lots rather than relying on stray ears.
