Artemus Ward the Nation's Jester and Humorist

Charles Farrar Browne born 1834 in Maine created Artemus Ward while a Cleveland journalist. He rose to Vanity Fair editor, wrote Artemus Ward His Book, toured as a lecturer, and influenced Lincoln who read Ward and inspired the Emancipation Proclamation era humor. Ward gained fame in America and England before his 1867 death.
