It notes her banishment from Massachusetts Bay for heresy after hosting controversial meetings, her move to Rhode Island, and eventual death in New Netherland. It credits her with inspiring religious tolerance and civil liberty later echoed in the U.S. Constitution.
Charles Farrar Browne born 1834 in Maine created Artemus Ward while a Cleveland journalist. He rose to Vanity Fair editor, wrote Artemus Ward His Book, toured as a lecturer, and influenced Lincoln who read Ward and inspired the Emancipation Proclamation era humor. Ward gained fame in America and England before his 1867 death.
