The 56th General Assembly backs a 3% sales tax as critics label it unfair to merchants and low income earners. The measure, seen as boosting revenue, faces strong opposition from opponents who deem the tax burdensome and harmful to consumers.
A columnist argues the 2 and 3 percent sales tax breaks the wealthy least while hitting low income individuals hardest and burdens retailers. They urge public input to Rep. W. E. Whitney and Sen. Boothby as the bill moves through the House. The piece notes lawmakers discuss tax increases versus spending and cites Sen. Schroeder and Sen. Schaff on limiting new spending.
The Adult Agriculture Night class will discuss How to Raise 100-Bushel Corn next Wednesday March 2 at the school. A panel discussion and a film are planned. Classes start at 7 30 p m with refreshments served after each session.
Trinity Lutheran Church Alta lists tonight at 7 30 p m an adult membership class and welcomes interested members. Friday at 2 p m World Day of Prayer at the Methodist Church invites all members. Saturday at 9 a m confirmation class and 11 a m junior choir rehearsals urge all sun day school children to attend. Next Sunday 8 30 a m Holy Communion 9 30 a m Sunday School 10 45 a m Holy Communion and 6 30 p m evening services.
The PMK Club hosts a pot luck supper and social evening Monday at 8 p m with organizers Ray Holstin Oscar Bodine Stanley Fredrickson Craig Buckingham and Arnold Kjolhede. On Wednesday a 7 30 p m mid week Lenten service titled The Choice of His Disciples precedes an 8 30 p m Trinity Choir rehearsal.
I express sincere thanks for neighbors and friends who offered sympathy and assistance during my wife’s hospital stay. Grateful for the many cards gifts flowers and visits from loved ones.
Monday offers meat sandwiches and potato soup with a fruit cup brownie and milk. Tuesday serves taverns potato chips tossed salad berries and milk. Wednesday features mashed potatoes cubed beef buttered corn bread and butter Apple Betty and milk. Thursday presents vegetable stew fruit salad cheese sandwiches pudding and milk. Friday includes fish fillets creamed potatoes buttered tomatoes bread and butter peaches and milk.
