John Whistler Father of Chicago A Soldier and Artist
John Whistler born 1758 in Ireland to an English family ran away to join the British army. He served under Burgoyne, was captured at Saratoga, later settled in Maryland, and returned to service in the Northwestern frontier. He built Fort Dearborn at Detroit’s foot of Lake Michigan and governed there for nine years before surrendering to Hull at Detroit. He later became a prisoner of war again and is noted as an uncommon American and ancestor of artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
