A reader questions civil justice versus military justice in the return of turncoat GIs from Red China. He urges lawful, maximum penalties if crimes are proven, while criticizing guilt by association and noting tax and policy debates in Iowa border states.
Cherokee county farmers are urged to inspect grain storage space ahead of harvest. Clifford L. Chapman, manager of the county ASC office, notes many have already built or bought new storage, with large corn and soybean crops expected and old grain supplies high.
Manager Chapman notes that lower market prices under government loan rates could boost demand for price support and storage capacity. The plan offers a 15 cent per bushel storage payment for keeping 1953 and 1954 corn on farms for another year, reseal rules keeping owner title and possession, four percent loans for up to 80 percent of new storage costs, and tax deductions over five years for added storage facilities.
Calendar lists events in Marcus and Cherokee County with schedules for Affiliated groups. Amherst Busy Bees and Marcus Merrymakers hold achievement shows at the Methodist church in Marcus on August 12 and 13 respectively. Pilot Rock plowing and 4-H shows run August 15 to 17. State Plowing Match is set for August 18 at the Bill Turner and Karl Gesland farms in Cherokee County.
