Drought Not Solving Surplus Says Iowa Expert

Geoffrey Shepherd of Iowa State College argues drought and low yields raise wheat prices but do not reduce surplus. He supports the wheat adjustment plan with government benefit payments covering two thirds of 1930–32 domestic use, plus freedom to sell this year’s crop. World markets show rising foreign production and tariffs have reduced U.S. wheat demand, leaving large stocks and a looming surplus even with a small 1933 crop.

Plan to reseed alfalfa due to drought in Iowa

Iowa farmers plan to reseed alfalfa sweet clover and red clover after hot weather and drought reduced spring seedings. For northern Iowa summer alfalfa seedings should occur by mid August, with red clover by August 1, while central and southern Iowa allow seedings by September 1. Seedbed prep favors discing and rolling over deep plowing, with no nurse crop. Summer success depends on moisture and proper seeding depth.
