Mrs Elmer Hansen and Mrs Luella Hickey return from Sioux City. A large group attends a Good Hope church party. Cecelia Linquist visits from Royal Iowa. Families from Odeboldt Rock township and nearby host homes for weekend gatherings. The Diamond Stars 4 H club met.
Saturday afternoon social at Dorothy Linquist home with Mrs. Vernon Anderson present. Visitors included Mrs. F C Peterson Mrs Clifford Carlson and others. Ema Otto demonstrated manicuring and Mrs Carlson spoke on Weisha Day at Iowa State College. Tree planted in district No 8 yard. Next meeting at Elsie Peterson home a mothers day event. C A Peterson hauled cattle to Sioux City. family visit followed. Junior cavair met at Rev Liming home. Several Peterson relatives visited Cherokee area. Mrs Henry Otto Jr stayed in Sioux City with her mother in hospital. Sunday guests at C A Peterson home from near Cherokee and Good Hope. A Mt Olive play attended by C J Liming and Della Peterson.
Tea first arrived in England in 1657 and was introduced to the court by Katherine of Braganza. Initially patronized by royalty, early tea was weaker and served in smaller cups. In the late eighteenth century afternoon tea evolved into a fashionable social ritual.
A period school notes page lists first to fifth grade classes with attendance, perfect spelling awards, and six weeks’ 100 percent achievers. Names include Mary Grace Baumgardner Fern Kolpin Donald Nelson Gene Peterson Bertil Peterson Roma Rapp Merrill Tutt Charles Wharton Dawn Hallengren and others. Teachers note birthdays, dramatic readings, drawing work, and ongoing math drills.
In fourth grade the boy's average was 87 1 6, girls 93 1 2, class 89 1 2 with 21 below 75 and 45 at 100 for six weeks. Sixth grade averages show girls 96, boys 85 2 3, class 90 1 2 with 22 below 75 and 47 at 100. Twenty five fifth graders were neither absent nor tardy. Debates favored the negative on capital punishment. Junior High notes list many students with perfect or high spelling marks and describe geography, history, and math work, along with assembly reports and upcoming events.
The Maple Valley Township Trustees held their meeting at the Center schoolhouse. Residents and visitors circulated between Storm Lake, Cherokee, and Sioux City for shopping, hospital visits, and family stops. Notable items include Velma Kolpin undergoing appendicitis surgery and Prof. J. Schmidt attending a teachers conference in Lavern.
L. Fr. C. members were entertained by Misses Mary and Ruth Dreyer on Saturday. Various locals including Mr. and Mrs. George Zwick and Laurine and A Cummings spent Sunday near Odeboldt. Visits from Clyde Young of Oto and others to the Young and Zwick households punctuate a quiet weekend in Afton and vicinity.
The District Court of Cherokee County Iowa appoints Frank Kolpin as Administrator of the estate of Frederick Kolpin deceased. All creditors must file sworn claims with the Clerk within legal time and debtors should pay promptly to avoid costs. Dated April 1 1931 Cherokee Iowa.
