Mrs. Herbert Rinn of Covington gave birth at Lakeview hospital in Danville to a fine baby boy who died shortly after. Her husband and Dr. Charles Wert traveled to Chicago to obtain a live infant and substituted it for the deceased newborn. The mother will be told of the substitution only after she recovers.
Members of the Progressive party in Fountain county are called to a mass convention at City Hall Attica on Tuesday January 6 1914 for county organization. Committeemen for townships will be chosen and then a county chairman. John W Martin, Chairman.
Mr and Mrs Peter Linn mark their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their Union street home in Attica. They were married in Sweden and have many local friends and family attending a quiet reception with children and grandchildren present.
An east bound Wabash freight derailed at the Falls creek bridge near the Williamsport mill delaying traffic Friday night. A coal car left the track and struck an electric signal, hindering movement until a Peru wrecking crew arrived.
John Hoover a local timer from a respected family pled guilty to grand larceny after robbing Attica Hardware Co. of 62.35 and about 200 in checks recovered from a post office box. He was bound over to circuit court on 1000 bond and jailed in Covington awaiting trial. Hoover admitted acting alone, blaming drunkenness for the crime.
James Strong, a Civil War veteran from Mellott, died this Friday morning at his home after long illness. He was past 79 and has been totally blind for four years. The funeral is planned for Sunday.
Covington circuit court adds several new cases this week. Wm R Campbell filing five suits for past due accounts against Charles Williams Wesley D Miller James Minnick Archie Minnick and Joseph Dice. Indiana relation suit seeks to compel Henry Lawson trustee to reroute school transport on a disputed dirt road. O P Lewis for James R Phipps and wife divorce and cross suit for divorce damages. Yeomens and Shedd Hardware Co versus John Osborn on debt plus Michael Watts versus N W Metsker and John M Metsker on note. Martin Coffing vs Clyde Price on note.
Glenn C. Reeves a former Fowler boy was killed when he fell between two freight cars after alighting from a moving passenger train near Enid Oklahoma. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Nelson Reeves of 660 Melbourne street Chicago and had lived in Fowler before the family moved to Chicago. He died three hours after the accident despite treatment at Enid hospital. He initially refused to identify himself but named his family shortly before death.
A 14 year old, ET Crane, son of Herbert Crane, was shot in the foot and leg by companion Conn while rabbit hunting near Pine Village. The boys stood on opposite sides of a hedge. Conn fired at what he mistook for a rabbit. The wound, though painful, is not considered dangerous.

Steeley McMahon a Pine Village druggist has accepted a traveling salesman post with Devoe Reynolds makers of Devoe paints. He will begin work after year start. The Village store remains owned by Steely and half brother T B Crigler and the partnership is unaffected. Clint Tinsman may lead the Attica store with Horace Harbaugh replacing him locally pending final decision.

Lodge organized May 11 1844 charter issued May 29 1845. oldest fraternity in the city and among the state's earliest lodges.
West Lebanon based Cadwallader Telephone Co says subscribers pay fifty cents per pair for renewed batteries. The piece argues maintenance costs, like replacing wires or poles, should be borne by the company and urges Public Utilities commission attention.
Riley Richardson a Fountain county pioneer died early Monday at his home south of Coal Creek in Fulton township after years of ill health. Born February 2 1885 he lived near his birthplace his entire life and was nearly 80 at death. He was the son of Aaron Richardson an early settler in the region.
The Pine Village grain elevator and lumber yard previously owned by Atkinson and Steele were sold to Howerton Bros of Oxford. An inventory is being taken and possession will be immediate. The Howertons had earlier bought a lumber yard in Oxford. a related contract dispute led to a damages award.
Billy M., the Fountain county pacer from Richland township, set a national record for the fastest mile by a gelding on a half-mile track in 1913. He achieved a 2:07 mile during the county fair in Covington, marking the feat in his home county.
The executive council of the Modern Woodmen of America announced on Saturday that it had abandoned its fight over insurance rates. The decision ends a two year conflict after the head camp in Chicago ordered higher rates, marking a retreat by the society’s administrative officers.
Veedersburg School Trustee Harry Spencer resigns his position and is replaced by D. H. Wallace the local druggist. R. D. Gookins was also a candidate and the race was close by a three to two vote.
Rhinehart Eha of Leavenworth Kansas visited Wednesday afternoon with his sister Mrs Antone Reidlinger. This marked the first time he has seen his sister since she left Germany thirty three years ago.

After a wedding trip to Chicago the couple will reside in Lafayette. Hubert Washburn and Bessie Mae Harvey wed quietly in Lafayette with only two witnesses. Cecelia Hullihan and Amiel Matthews also married on Christmas, with Hullihan a Fix school teacher and Matthews from Davis township.
