Fountain county will hold its second annual joint common schools commencement in Attica on June 1 with United States Commissioner of Education Dr. P. P. Caxton as lead speaker. Over five thousand visitors are anticipated. the day includes a parade, graduation in the Sterling building, and a Ravine Park program with music and addresses.

Irving Webster, formerly of Saturday Press, takes over as business manager of the Veedersburg News. Charles M. Berry, publisher for twenty years, faced financial strain from generous advertising policy and extended printing costs. Webster aims to collect long overdue accounts dating back to Berry’s editor years while Berry concedes weak business sense. If they work together the News may return to a solid financial footing.

Dean Reece, Attica high school 1909, completed his DVM at Indianapolis Veterinary College and opens a practice in his father’s livery barn after earlier work at Pine Village. He is cheerful about starting his veterinary career in this city with his father as spectator at the graduation. Sterling Doster welcomed a newborn son at the National Car Coupler plant weighing nine pounds and showed early rooting traits for the hometown team.

City considers fifty low cost rental homes this spring
The Ledger Press notes urgent need for fifty rental houses. A Merchants association committee including Mayor Reed and L. G. Martin was formed to explore building cheap homes to sell to tenants, enabling day laborers to gain permanent residence. The building association has funds if loan safeguards can be found.

Swen Carlson born in Jolking Sweden July 21 1843 came to America at 21. Civil War veteran Co A 154th Indiana volunteers and G A R member. Married twice to Tilda Abrams and later to the family, nine children born. six survive. Died April 15 after kidney and bladder surgery in hospital, aged 69 years 8 months 27 days. body brought to Attica for home burial.

Union and New streets funeral planned for 2:00 PM Saturday at the Brown home for Mrs. Sarah M. Birch a Shawnee township pioneer who died yesterday at 9:00 AM after an 18 week heart ailment. Birch born in North Carolina November 27 1880 had lived in the county since age two. Burial at Newtown with Rev. J J Conkle and Rev. T W Stewart officiating.

Fires Strike Three Buildings in Davis Township
In Davis township a Friday morning blaze damaged the Roberts blacksmith shop owned by Will Martin and rented to Virgil Martin. A tramp’s shelter fire near Fix schoolhouse threatened the school and was put out. A barn on J Frank Brown’s farm burned Wednesday night, destroying six horses and much equipment with about 1000 dollars loss, insured.

Tragedy in Veedersburg as Train Kills Local Worker
John Pritchard aged 30 was killed by an eastbound Big Four train near the old cemetery in Veedersburg early Sunday. He boarded at Covington while en route to his mother Mrs P Filburn in Veedersburg. it is unclear if he fell or was thrown while trying to alight. His funeral was held at his mother’s home and he is buried at Cold Spring cemetery. He was a cousin of Dr C G Beckett.
