Orchards in Iowa show widow pays mortgage and builds home
Mrs. Harris of Cass county preserves ten acre orchard with 1000 trees planted in 1869. After husband James Harris died the orchard provided a steady income averaging 500 yearly, paying off the mortgage, funding a new house, educating children, and supporting the farm. The tale, from Atlantic, Ia Sept 20 1805, extols the orchard’s success and plans for expansion.
