Wasnixeter Sept 6 B E K Valentine formerly sergeant at arms of the Senate writes Secretary Alger that relatives of a soldier from the Second Nebraska Regiment received a letter claiming the man was sick and needed money. Money sent then sent again by registered mail with no reply. Soldier says he is well and never requested funds. It is thought a swindler wrote the first message.

In San Francisco on September 6 two hospital deaths occurred in the division. Privates Oliver F. Mack of Iowa Fifty-first and Jacob Ebert of the Twenty-third infantry died of diseases. Eighty-five patients are in hospitals, with thirty-nine yet in the hospital, others in furlough or residences. Colonel Loper says the men are content and willing to stay until a decision on Honolulu is made, though he is anxious to return home if not sent away.
