In Cumberland on May 16 a $10,000 damages suit was filed against John Reed a young Cumberland merchant by Dick Margerel alleging the alienation of Margerel's wife. The case, seen as blackmail, has reportedly been settled with minimal dispute after Mrs Margerel and child left for Marengo to live with relatives.

Spokane man shoots rancher after wage dispute
Spokane, May 17. Theodore Cushing shot and killed Thomas King at King's ranch following a dispute over wages. King demanded payment, threatened Cushing with a club, and pursued him. Cushing retrieved a gun from the house, fired, and King died within hours. Cushing surrendered and is jailed.
