Council discusses light at Shaw Crombie yard corner and hiring a second night watchman at 380 per month. Wilken wins mayoral confirmation by roll call. Fire company manning proposed as 20 for hose and 25 for hook and ladder. city to allot 300 to Atlantic department if reorganized. Meeting ends with positive notes on fire service. Federation of Labor meets in Indianapolis to push for an eight hour day with Carpenters National union likely to test and possibly strike. Also reports Private Allen’s custody after shooting Private Call, a Philadelphia fire, a boxing draw in Hot Springs, and Judge Long pension docket update.
Des Moines reports the senate set next Thursday for a special order on the manufactures bill, with prospects waning as opponents admit likely passage while constitutional prohibition seems delayed. Both chambers met briefly, minor amendments were adopted, and a church and school meeting disturbance bill was pushed then defeated. A bill to punish breakins of freight cars passed heated debate but failed final passage by three votes.
Des Moines March 24 a remarkable scene closed the district court trial of Mrs Bertha A Collins for murdering her infant. Verdict of acquittal came in five minutes to a packed courtroom. Cheers and hugs followed. Collins fainted as she was congratulated, and her attorney Mr Parrott was later carried out after fainting.
