Appalling Disaster at St. Louis Tornado Devastates City
A massive cyclone struck St. Louis and East St. Louis on May 28, tearing through the center of the Missouri metropolis. Reports indicate hundreds killed or wounded, with the Grand Republic and other river steamers lost, hospitals filled, power and gas down, and fires breaking out across a ruined grid as East St. Louis endures similar wreckage and dozens of local structures collapse. The storm, described as 80 miles per hour, caused extensive river and rail damage, with numerous deaths and missing persons across both cities.
