Secretary Hoke Smith sent to the house the report of the board of appraisers who praised improvements by intruders in the Cherokee Nation. Awards totaled 117 cases for 74000 dollars, later modified by the Indian office to 89645 dollars in 89 cases. The secretary of the interior approved the modification.
Washington reports approximate 1895 gold production at 52000000 dollars and silver at about 61000000 fine ounces. 1894 figures were 39500000 in gold and 49500000 ounces of silver. Parcel Post between the United States and Great Britain assured after talks with Sir Julian Pauncefote and Lord Gough and Postmaster General Wilson.

Ottawa January 7 cabinet meeting led by Premier Sir Mackenzie Bowell with six remaining ministers deciding to fill at once the vacancies caused by the resignations of Foster Wood Tupper Dickey Ives Montague and Haggart.
Disorder arose in east London as German and Dutch sailors at the docks were hissed and molested. Windows of shops run by German Jews and several German clubs were closed as a result of the unrest.
Cape Colony treasurer J C Gordon Spriggs succeeds Cecil Rhodes as premier. Spriggs, born in 1830, takes office following Rhodes. He holds K O M G honors.
At noon the German emperor William greeted Dr. W. C. G. Leyds, secretary of state for the Transvaal, at the new Berlin palace. The meeting signals ongoing diplomatic channels with the Transvaal authorities.
Washington January 7 General William Polk Lascelle, 59, died here from injuries after a fall last Tuesday. Born in Logansport Indiana he entered the army with Company K Ninth Indiana volunteers. He was twice brevetted for gallant service and rose to brigadier general of volunteers.
Huntington West Virginia January ice broke at the mouth of Beaver creek while a skating party skated. Tony Brooks and Walter Quinlan drowned. James Wogan was rescued by a reciting party.
The Quincy Omaha and Kansas City railroad run from West Quincy to Trenton Mo has been transferred to a syndicate led by Drexel Gilmanson and the Missouri Kansas and Texas Trust company. About 1 500 000 in preferred bonds back the deal the lien will foreclose and the syndicate will take possession and reorganize. New lines will connect Kansas City St Joseph and Quincy to Pattensburg Decatur and the Indiana Decatur and Western forming another through trunk line to the seaboard. Bondholders paid cash or in shares.
Des Moines January 7. The Iowa House speakership contest has narrowed to H W Byers of Shelby county W B Allen of Van Buren and H J Griswold of Buchanan. The 26th general assembly opens next Monday with debates on liquor manufacture joint freight rates woman suffrage insurance building and loan matters age of consent labor and other topics. The commission’s revision of the state code also awaits action. Captain W H Fleming Iowa Capital writer to be governor’s private secretary after 14 years in the role.

A fire yesterday gutted the M. E. church in Dakota City Nebraska. The blaze started in a furnace in the basement and the brick structure erected in 1873 cost about 4000 dollars. Loss mainly from the organ and pews with about 600 dollars insured.
Allison Presidential Club formed in Des Moines county to solicit letters from Iowans who moved away, urging state pride to support Senator Allison for president. Mrs Nead robbed of 967 dollars in Sioux City after a customer paid with a twenty. attacker knocked her down and escaped with cash.
The funeral for John W. Pearman known as the squatter governor of Nebraska occurred at his Omaha residence this morning. The cortege then proceeded to Nebraska City with a considerable turnout from the G A R joining the procession.
Judge Husted challenged the grand jury to indict Mayor Olinger if he took more than the $1,500 salary allowed for all duties of the mayor's position and to indict aldermen if they raised their own salaries. Des Moines Bank Bids For Bonds. Starostka's Injuries Fatal.

General M. O. Leggett died of apoplexy after a three day illness in Cleveland. He served on Grant's staff at Donelson as colonel and was brevetted brigadier general for gallantry at Corinth and major general at Vicksburg. He led the Seventeenth corps in the Atlanta campaign and later was commissioner of patents under Grant and a patent lawyer in Cleveland since 1875.
In Scorrssula Ind on January 7 Walter Coombs fatally wounded his wife with a bowels shot and then wounded himself below the heart. He survived and begged for death while their two children were at school. Mrs Coombs was highly respected and jealousy was cited as the motive.
A courier from Squaw Tanks reports Navajo Indians blocked by three sheepmen near Fruaastarr. Sheriff and posse head to aid whites and arrest Indians over grazing rights on public lands. Also Denver Chamber plans railroad to Cripple Creek with organized stock subscription.
Burrato January 7. The Buffalo strike at the Western New York and Pennsylvania shops is settled. The workers gains are granted with the exception of restoring wages everywhere.
The Artésian Ice and Brewing Company's building, among the state's largest ice houses, was destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at 100000 dollars.
