A fierce blizzard disrupted the Midwest and parts of the East with snow drifts up to six feet. Rail service suffered as westbound express trains stalled, passengers faced long delays, and crews worked to clear tracks amid record cold and whiteout conditions.
In St Paul the Germania Allemania and West Side banks closed amid a run on deposits following the Bank of Minnesota failure. Bank examiner Kenyon assumed control at the Germania, with the Allemania and West Side filing assignments to cashiers. Public funds across the three banks and city accounts are tied up, while state and county authorities consider legal actions on assignments.
The Normal and Business College in Atlantic outgrows current quarters and a new building seems cheaper long term. A strong school would draw hundreds of students and tens of thousands of dollars yearly, boosting town prosperity and attracting families. With proper facilities, Atlantic could outrun neighboring towns and revive prosperity through education.
The first school day of the year saw strong attendance as seventeen new pupils joined the Atlantic school. Professor Moyer now teaches mathematics and is recognized as a thorough county educator.

The exhibit highlights careful workmanship and the map’s current city layout. The Modern Woodmen of America plan a banquet and officer installation on January 14 with multiple committees named for banquet music arrangements and program. The Danish Society Freja elected officers for the coming term and announced an entertainment on January 21 and a masquerade ball planned for February.
