Thousand ships to be ready in a year says Shipping Board
The Shipping Board announced a plan to build and command a U S merchant fleet of more than 1600 ships totaling about 9 2 million tons within a year, with 458 ships in operation and 117 German Austrian ships overtaken by the Emergency Fleet Corporation. The board has contracted for 636 ships totaling 3 1247 million tons and expects first launches in 60 to 90 days, with further construction planned under a proposed 1 billion dollar congressional appropriation.
