Negro pupils began desegregation of Catholic schools in New Orleans archdiocese with about a dozen at St. Leo the Great and small numbers at St. Mary of the Angels and Mater Dolorosa. No incidents reported as Msgr. Pyzikiewicz spoke with mothers outside Mater Dolorosa and the band played the national anthem. About 9,000 of the archdiocese’s 48,000 pupils are Negroes. Public schools start a third year of integration Thursday.

Cass County Crop Report Details Growing Stage and Yields

The Cass County extension reports about 40 percent of the corn crop in the denting stage and in excellent condition. About 20 percent of fall plowing and five percent of silo filling are done. Nearly all of the third hay cutting has been harvested.

Mrs John R DeWitt and Arthur Brouse driven cars collided at the Fourth and Montgomery intersection in Griswold. Brouse northbound DeWitt westbound then turning south caused the crash. Brouse car damage about 175 dollars DeWitt about 122 dollars. Mrs Brouse rode with her husband and both escaped injury.

Mrs H L Handley 47 of Arcadia California died August 31 after a lingering illness. Born 1915 on a farm south of Griswold to Alva W Peterson and Janet Symes Peterson. Memorial services were held in Arcadia with interment at Lowman Cemetery south of Griswold. Survived by husband three sons H L Scott and Jeffrey and stepmother Mrs Alva W Peterson of Mountain Grove Missouri plus several stepsisters and brothers.
