Griswold C. Watkins died Wednesday at Jenme Basareo hospital after a brief illness. Born in Mais state at Tower, he was the son of Charles Hoo and Mary Watkins. He was married June.
In Missouri, a Wednesday funeral followed by burial at Tabor Cemetery in Tabor. The service honors Mrs. Omana and Sister of Comeil Jensen, with ties to Kansas City.
An appeal for a stay of execution for Charles Baward Kelley 21 scheduled to hang for murder was filed by his court appointed attorney Robert Heithoff of Council Bluffs. The brief argues the five point appeal reached Gev Norman Erbe Tuesday as Kelley’s case moves through appeals.
Clouds persist with higher temperatures and light rainfall. Yesterday's rainfall was 0.19 inches and the day peaked at 84 degrees. Morning low 50 and noon 53. Weekend highs reached 81. Labor Day rainfall pushes year total to 20.09 inches, 0.05 inch above last year’s level on this date.

The Cass County extension reports about 40 percent of the corn crop in the denting stage and in excellent condition. About 20 percent of fall plowing and five percent of silo filling are done. Nearly all of the third hay cutting has been harvested.

Mrs John R DeWitt and Arthur Brouse driven cars collided at the Fourth and Montgomery intersection in Griswold. Brouse northbound DeWitt westbound then turning south caused the crash. Brouse car damage about 175 dollars DeWitt about 122 dollars. Mrs Brouse rode with her husband and both escaped injury.
Federal mediator holds separate sessions with telegraphers union and Chicago and North Western Railway in a bid to end a six day strike. Talks resume where Monday’s two hour session left off as both sides seek common ground on job security and workers protections amid fallout for farmers and manufacturers.
Mrs H L Handley 47 of Arcadia California died August 31 after a lingering illness. Born 1915 on a farm south of Griswold to Alva W Peterson and Janet Symes Peterson. Memorial services were held in Arcadia with interment at Lowman Cemetery south of Griswold. Survived by husband three sons H L Scott and Jeffrey and stepmother Mrs Alva W Peterson of Mountain Grove Missouri plus several stepsisters and brothers.
The Cass county extension family living committee announced dates for herb cookery classes. The first session on Sept 17 targets Cass Pleasant Bear Grove and Noble township homemakers at an announced site. A Sept 24 class is planned for Pymosa and nearby residents.
