Washington announced that students joining the Students Army Training Corps will have all college expenses paid and receive private pay of thirty dollars a month. They will wear Khaki, serve as privates, and colleges become military institutions with officers touring to inspect campuses.
Word reaches Vil lisca of the deaths of Lawrence Gridley and Victor Frist, both sons of local families, as members of Company F. They were killed in action in France, the notices state.
Relief expedition of three small companies faced severe blizzards as they traveled from Fort Dodge and Webster City to aid Spirit Lake massacre survivors in 1857. They buried victims, faced cold, deep snow, and distant Indians, with historian Thomas Teakle praising their courage and hardship as unmatched in Mississippi Valley pioneer history.

New rules set prices, selling options, and milling limits guiding farmers on wheat handling and redistribution to support soldiers.
United States Food Administrator J F Deems of Iowa warns farmers and rail managers of the fire risks from stacked grain, hay near rail lines and weed-covered rights of way. Sparks from locomotives can travel long distances, prompting a call for immediate protective action and new laws.

Capt William Jacobs of San Leandro Calif unveils a self bailing non sinkable lifeboat built like a raft with two passenger compartments top and bottom. Federal inspectors in Oakland tested the craft in water bow first, it submerged and righted, then settled upright after ballast emptied. The inventor claims the self bailing device prevents sinking.
Alaska villagers raised funds for soldiers by selling furs cutting ivory and tongshoreing for ships. Wil�m T. Lopp, head of the Alaskan division of the Bureau of Education, says a village saved for a sawmill contributed 100 of its hoard to the cause amid World War I efforts in remote polar regions.
