Miners Rescued From 259-Foot Underground Gallery

A rescue shaft drilled after contact with the men broke through as a medical team waited for decompression. Eighty six others escaped and forty are missing and believed drowned. In Iowa Anamosa the Iowa Men's Reformatory resumed normal routine after fires and inmate unrest sparked by food prices and staff objections. The state director of corrections blamed lack of communication and proposed an inmate council to improve contact between inmates and administrators. Governor Hughes said the disturbance was driven by discontent, with authorities investigating further.
