A fragment offers advice on packing for camping or prospecting trips, endorsing Chamberlain's Cuke and Diarrhona Remedy as a precaution. It warns the remedy is unavailable during travel and at sea, urging travelers to obtain supplies before setting out and to place orders ahead.
From Moscow in March a great dearth of medicines was noted with many drug stores closing. Wood and coal were scarce as frame houses were demolished for fuel. Ruble value was poor. food costly but available to those with money. Prices included shave 75 rubles, horse meat 350, beef 650, pork 1000, black bread 350, butter 2400, fats 200 per pound. Clothing was unaffordable for the poor, who patched garments or made their own.
Readers learn that internal medicines rarely help chronic rheumatism and that most cases stem from simple muscular or inflammatory strains. The ad promotes Chamberlain's Liniment as the effective relief, available widely at 35 cents per bottle and in a large size for 60 cents.
May 11 Des Moines. Miss Madeline M Southard of Kansas urged that women be admitted to the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church at the general conference. Several other speakers backed the motion, while W C Sing of India objected, saying it would discredit Christianity. The conference opened by noting deaths of Bishop John H Vincent and John T Stone. A separate proposal would mandate Bible reading in public schools and place the ten commandments on school walls, decided by a legislative education committee. The plan would remove the need for teacher discretion.
Cedar Rapids faces a home shortage as warehouses fill with household goods. Local storage firms note rapid changes as residents and newcomers store furniture while seeking residences. Families move out, ship in goods, and store them while hunting new housing, with one firm expanding space to accommodate growing business.
Illinois Republicans at Springfield on May 11 elected ten at large national delegates with four fifths vote, pledging the delegation to Gov. Frank O. Lowden for president until he is released by him. A platform plank backing Mayor William Hale Thompson's principles failed 110 to 63 as McCormick urged unity for Lowden. Cook County delegates remained silent amid pandemonium as the crowd pressed for a solid front for Lowden.
H M Havner issues a letter challenging N E Kendall J F Deems and E R Moore to joint debates on campaign issues ahead of the June primary. He favors Des Moines or multiple city discussions across the state with houses of candidates excluded. Arbitration in industry disputes should be a topic, among others. England rent acts limit increases to ten percent for landlords.
Felix M. Warburg, prominent New York banker and philanthropist, was formally presented with the Haber degree of the Jewish faith by a delegation of rabbis from the First Hungarian congregation Ohub Zedel. The honor, dating to Talmudic times, recognizes his humanitarian services and charitable works in recent years, likened to the earlier conferral on Sir Moses Montefiore for saving Damascus’s Jewish population in 1848.
Margaret Hagney twelve years old slept on West Twenty fifth street when two burglars entered her home. She woke, challenged them, chased one man to the doorway and knocked him unconscious with her own bank while the other fled with the coins. Neighbors found her unconscious on the floor after the break in.
A man known as Trelon Ross, described as having an ingrowing grouch, was granted a divorce on cruelty grounds. Ness filed the suit but failed to appear in court. His estranged wife cited excessive cat keeping as a grievance, while letters signed "Your Baby?" surfaced in the record.
Pittsburgh and Allegheny county steel workers and miners are using much of their income to buy homes, reports John D. Graham receiver of deeds. In 1918 deeds and mortgages filed totaled 60,437,219 compared with 81,805 in 1915. First quarter figures show 16,385,13 for 1918 versus 7,980 in early 1915, with many properties being small houses. A separate note recalls $8,000 in gold and a large sum in paper money dug from the ruins of a Platte City jewelry store owned by L W Recht, believed to have hidden funds due to distrust of banks. The paper money was in a small tin box, but escaped the heat.
Preparations for the Pilgrim Fathers tercentenary celebration in Plymouth begin with a civic reception on September 3, followed by a literary conference, historical pageant, and open air service at the Mayflower stone. A play on the Pilgrims is in progress, with a Guildhall ball likely and a Mayflower pageant from September 1 to 10 led by Captain the Rev. Hugh Parry, later to tour America. The event centers on the Barbican site where the Pilgrims sailed in 1620.
