Campaign to boost spring wheat by Iowa farmers
Special to The Telegraph Des Moines March 1 1918. The Iowa state council of defense led by former Governor Warren Garst has launched a campaign to persuade farmers to increase wheat acreage. A letter to county defense councils urges publicity and pledges to devote portions of land to ten bushels of wheat. Seed wheat is available from the U S Food Administration in Minneapolis which holds 300000 bushels of Marquis seed wheat. This spring wheat is claimed to outperform other Iowa varieties and yield 11 to 13 extra bushels per acre.
