Death by suicide pact ends lives of two girls near Alcester
Gladys Kempston aged 17 of Beresford and Elma Stevenson 16 of Centerville were killed when a North Western freight train struck them near Alcester South Dakota. The girls and two local boys Ralph Carlson and Edmund Rowan had traveled to Sioux City to see the sight. After wandering back toward home food provisions were sought at a farm. An engineer reported one girl rose and lay down again before the impact, while the boys said one girl had threatened to die rather than face family disgrace.
