Senator Robert LaFollette Dies at 70 in Wisconsin
Senator Robert M. LaFollette of Wisconsin, independent Republican leader and former presidential candidate, died at his Wyoming Avenue home in Washington today at 1 21 p.m. after a battle with heart disease and complications. He was 70, having turned that age the previous Sunday. LaFollette, in frail health since last fall, had been surrounded by family including his wife, Robert M. LaFollette Jr., and daughters Mrs. George Middleton and Mrs. Ralph Zucker. The long-time senator, noted for oil investigation leadership and a break with regular Republicans to form an independent party, was in public life since 1885 and served as governor from 1901 to 1905 and in the U.S. Senate since then. His death ends a storied political career marked by clashes with party leadership and a persistent push for reform.
