Sidelights of the Convention on Nomination Speeches
Dr C L Campbell recalls the 1920 Republican National Convention in Chicago where Harding of Ohio was nominated by Willis of Ohio. Willis delivered a commanding six foot four inch oratorical performance that eclipsed other speakers. Mrs Douglas Robinson’s five minute seconding speech for Wood impressed the crowd with Teddy Roosevelt style emphasis. The Wellington demonstration for Wood lasted forty minutes with colored feathered placards, while Lowden and Johnson elicited long, spirited receptions. Hoover’s brief showcase drew the most original reception.
