Uphold Denial of Robeson’s Passport
The U S Court of Appeals affirmed the State Department's denial of a passport to singer Paul Robeson who refused to confirm past or present Communist Party membership. The ruling upheld Judge Burnita Matthews's dismissal of Robeson's suit against Secretary Dulles. Robeson offered no reply to requests for an affidavit on party membership. He argued citizenship entitled him to travel, including to Russia.
