Sunnyside pool opens this Sunday under Gaylord Meyers former Atlantic high school star. The pool is open daily 1 to 10 pm with single season tickets at 6 and family tickets at 12 for the season.
Des Moines reports that a survey of the five state penal institutions is under way led by Dr. Walter Lunden, an associate professor of sociology at Iowa State College. H. H. Hauge, chairman of the state board of control, said the study should yield a comprehensive set of recommendations for improving guard and inmate training and related programs.
Winterset high school appoints Henry Miller as principal to replace resigning Ray Minnis. Miller, a WWII veteran, taught seven years in Winterset before enlisting in 1942, has pursued further college work, and last winter directed special education in Ringgold county.
Washington politics heat up as Truman Administration clashed with Mrs Roosevelt at the Jefferson Day dinner, Snyder and Sullivan sparred over speaking amid Wallace's attack on the Truman doctrine, while Michigan senators Vandenberg and Ferguson block two key appointments delaying Perlman for solicitor general and Biddle to the UN.

A reader recounts a Missouri ballad about the Taylors George and Bill who killed an entire Meeks or Sims family in Carroll County. George escaped, Bill was hanged after a jail escape. Washington reports the state department closed its long feud on Argentina policy with Ambassador George Messersmith resigning and Spruille Braden stepping down as undersecretary of state. John E. Farber 32 son of the late E N M Barber and a Drake University law graduate was denied permission to take the state bar examinations next Tuesday to Thursday at Iowa City. A five member Iowa supreme court panel ruled at a closed hearing yesterday. Polk and Marshall County bar associations had urged denial citing concerns about Farber moral character.
Extra Mrs Ina Gustin and son George of Guthrie Center spend a week here with her sister Mrs Walter Schlottfeldt and family and brother Everett Baylour and family. Richard Schlottfeldt, who attends the school for the blind at Vinton, has returned home. His grandfather went to Vinton after him.

Governors from 48 states were invited to a July Hawaii tour aboard a navy sea voyage to acquaint civilians with the service. Rear Admiral Felix Johnson announced that Gov. Robert D. Blue of Sevmai and nine others have accepted, with nine more tentatively. Blue avoided discussing the cruise, while President Charles E. Friley of Iowa State College is also slated to join.
