Iowa news briefs note heavy rains and flooding across counties. Memorial services and obituaries appear for Warren H Meeker and other local figures. Ames reports funeral plans for Meeker and a memorial service for Des Moines AMVETS at the campus hall.
The three day Memorial day weekend ends with seven traffic and other accident deaths in Iowa far below prior warnings. Victims include Paul Sanders 27 Onawa. Paul Kuhn 13 Rowley. Emery Hart. Robert Bulick 8 Rock Rapids. Emma Weldon 75 Waterloo. Harrye McCannon 19 and Paul Koelner 41 from Burlington. Clarence Richards Mason City. Also noted visiting guests Earl Black and daughter from Detroit Lakes Minnesota with Myrtle Black.
The forecast calls for cooler conditions in the southeast tonight. Tuesday brings partly cloudy skies and a rise in temperature with showers expected in the western area late in the afternoon.

Six western Iowa men were detained as an investigation into Mervin Felton 20 of Minden Iowa death proceeds. Felton died in a Council Bluffs hospital from a cerebral hemorrhage possibly due to blows after an altercation. Five detained men received five days for disturbing the peace. another was held for the state. No charges yet filed in Felton death.
The Atlantic municipal utilities plant runs on one boiler, with a second boiler under repair. Thirteen new tubes added to the active boiler. another boiler moved to overhaul after running at high capacity during the emergency. If the active boiler fails, power and water could be cut off, with a portable diesel unit available and utilities officials seeking a contingency interconnection. Patrons urged to conserve electricity and avoid unnecessary outages. electric department kept full service during Saturday night shopping.
E Carl Curtis 64 longtime Atlantic resident died at Culver City California at 7 30 am Saturday from injuries after being struck by a car while going to work. He had a skull fracture and leaves three children two sisters and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements await arrival of the remains.
Dryden sells the Extra coffee shop to Leonard Tiny Flathers who took possession Saturday. Flathers, a former cook in the service, now operates the business.
An 81 year old motorist from New York identified as Margaret Leddi died in a fatal incident near LaGuardia Field involving a liner. Authorities reported the accident occurred near the airport area with investigative steps underway.
A nine member civilian commission led by Dr. Karl Compton says compulsory training for up to 960000 American youths yearly is essential to deter aggression and ensure national defense amid fragile peace. They warn without universal training, the nation risks a hollow military and wider spread totalitarianism. The report, endorsed by President Truman in principle, awaits congressional action with possible army navy parity legislation this summer.
Washington June 2 The House approved Republican backed tax cuts to reduce individual income taxes from 10.5 to 80 percent effective July 1. Senate sanctions expected by tomorrow and the bill then goes to President Truman who faces a veto decision amid GOP control.
Washington reports the government will rely on market pricing to obtain wheat for export rather than fix a top purchase price. Officials say reserves will be bought as needed to aid foreign areas, fearing a fixed price would slow sales and delay shipments amid tight transport. Wheat purchases from the 1947 crop should begin in a week or ten days as harvest starts in northern Texas.
Albert D. Newcomb, 49, of Des Moines, burned to death after a collision between an Iowa Packing Co. truck and a coal truck driven by Roy Pope near Pleasantville on highways 92 and 60. Pope hospitalized with internal injuries. coroner plans no inquest.
The Associated Press reports widespread destruction from a tornado system in Arkansas and Oklahoma with 39 dead and hundreds injured. Pine Bluff, Arkansas, bore the heaviest impact, while Leedey Oklahoma suffered severe damage and multiple fatalities. Roads and bridges were washed out by flooding as search-and-rescue continued for missing persons.
Two day of heavy flash floods in northeast Nebraska recede after damaging crops and railroad lines. The Elkhorn River crest reached 9.7 feet, then fell two feet by morning. A C and NW passenger train derailed west of Fremont and lines were washed out near Battle Creek Clarkson Snyder and between Dodge and Howells.
Anita Federated Home and Garden club sponsors a display of peonies and other spring flowers in the basement of the Methodist church from 2 to 4 30 on Saturday afternoon June 7. The event is open to the public with no charge.
