Richmond Frigate Burned At Eastport Beach
Historic frigate Richmond once Farragut’s flagship and a Civil War symbol on the Maine coast was torched at Eastport Beach. The ship, dating to 1868, had served in multiple wars, been camouflaged during New Orleans bombardment, and later used as a receiving ship before aging into idle status. Captain John P. Turner lit fires along the hull, then leapt into Pasgamaquoddy Bay and was rescued. The blaze marks the last act in a long service life ending with the Richmond’s destruction on the eastern Maine shore.
