Knights Templar Celebrate Semi centennial at Spirit Lake

The Brand commandery of Knights Templar in Spirit Lake Iowa marks fifty one annual conclave week long events at Templar Park. A six week summer resort supports 62 Iowa commanderies with 7000 members. The site includes a 360 person capacity frame pavilion dining room and a 50 plus dance floor. Public exercises run through Friday with tents for attendees and a unique private grounds for the order.

Third lock nearing completion at Soo canal

SAULT STE MARIE Minn July 15 With a length 850 feet greater than any other lock in the world the new third lock at the Soo canal is rapidly nearing completion and engineers predict it will open to navigation within a month The lock totals 1350 feet in length 80 feet wide and can admit boats with 24 foot draft This epochal addition will allow a gross tonnage ten times the expected Panama canal annual tonnage now passing through the existing locks Three locks are in operation eight months of 1913 saw about 60000000 tons of freight move through the Soo locks and since the iron ore boom through Upper Michigan more than 500000000 tons have been shipped plus enormous copper ore lumber and wheat shipments The Soo locks trace back 117 years with locks built by the North West Fur Co and later developments culminating in the Poe lock built in 1896
