Balloonist falls into air as rope saves life at Oakland
A July Fourth balloon ride ended with Rawson Jones nearly whipped from the sky when a half hitch around his heel kept him aloft. Jones climbed hand over hand to the balloon's cross bar and rode the parachute down after the pilot refused to let him descend. He landed safely in a corn field after the balloon drifted about three miles north. Celebrants chased the craft to Treynor where Jones remained a social fixture until a later nervous collapse.
