In Dubuque county a suit by Clar vree H. Komler to stop Ole O. Roe the state fire marshal from destroying a prewar old frame building known as the barracks was dismissed. Komler agreed to remove the structure soon after. The ruling noted the fire marshal can order demolition or removal and enforce penalties but cannot personally destroy the building. State representatives included Roe J. A. Tracy and Henry D. Sampson.
Council Bluffs la Jan 27 nearly 400 students and many older relatives attended the Ames college short course at the Auditorium. Instruction covered agriculture horticulture live stock and domestic science with Ames instructors arriving from Knoxville. Exhibits showed high grade stock grains and a carload of top products from the state farms, many winning at the state fair.
Waterloo Iowa January 27 A blaze gutted the Paul Davis dry goods store in the six story building owned by C C Lamson. Loss on stock about 200000 insured 102000 building loss 125000 insured 100000 and additional damage from offices on the fourth floor likely 29000. Five firemen overcome but no lives lost. Business to be suspended only for rebuilding.
Washington reports a group of fifteen recalcitrant suffrage members led by Mrs. Russell M. MacLennan bolted the Congressional Union and formed a rival body. They will affiliate with the National Woman's Suffrage association committee led by Mrs. Medill McCormick, condemning the union's alleged partisan policy aimed at defeating Congress members for not backing an equal suffrage amendment. Also noted is a St Paul trial item: Martin J. Planagan and Pred Parser indicted on charges related to police protection for underworld figures.
Chicago and Dayton women share testimonials praising Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound for relief from female ailments and pains, claiming it prevented surgeries. Letters note headaches, fatigue, and side pains improved, with a confidential response service offered from Lynn Massachusetts.
Springfield January 27 United Press reports Illinois new public utilities commission will limit complaints received. A ruling defining allowable complaints will be issued soon.
