A vegetarian since youth, she reads without glasses, sews, walks in pleasant weather, and tends grounds. Born December 1837 in Pennsylvania, she taught school at 15, moved to Iowa City before towns existed, married in 1857, and widowed 18 years ago. She weighs 91 pounds and plans to live actively until 85.
