Des Moines veteran attorney Donald Evans aged 71, longtime law partner of Federal Judge William F. Riley, died after a lung operation. Son of the late Iowa Supreme Court justice William D. Evans of Hampton, he served as director of Central Life Assurance and trustee of Grinnell College. Born in Hampton in 1882, Evans graduated Grinnell in 1903 and Drake Law in 1907, began practice there and moved to Des Moines in 1908.
Mobile tuberculosis X ray units complete their third day at Cass County sites. By Thursday evening 4,246 X rays had been taken. Units will stay through Jan 16 with stations at Anita Atlantic Griswold. A list of workers and eligibility criteria is provided.
Rebecca Gross, 48, editor of the Lock Haven Express, plans to continue her newspaper career from a hospital wheelchair after losing both legs in a crash. She aims to write about highway safety and has begun rehabilitation with aid to use artificial limbs, recalling her Harvard Nie man Fellowship and Russia trip coverage for AP.
Mary Ann Kaiser daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl R Kaiser of RFC 14 Anita won the News Telegraph first baby contest for 1954 with a birth at 1130 pm January 2 at Atlantic Memorial hospital. She will receive 14 prizes plus a six month subscription to the News Telegraph. The Atlantic’s first baby of 1954 was Joyce Irene Nagel born January 3 at 504 am to Mr and Mrs Arthur Nagel of 1107 Birch Street, receiving two prizes. Local merchants provided gifts.

Mrs. Mae Graham learned on Wednesday of the death in New Jersey of Charley Atkinson, brother-in-law to the Grahams. His wife Ethel Myers of Lewis, a Des Moines native, had been ill for five months in Des Moines and was visiting her sister when illness struck. Mrs. Graham left Thursday to be with her sister.
Jerald and Sharon Flower of Omaha have been visiting their grandmother Mrs. Frank Albright for the past two weeks.
Mr and Mrs Paul Flower traveled to Mexico and California with Jerald who contracted mumps while in Lewis. The Flowers arrived after the children on Thursday. Mrs Ray Webster from Waterlo o visited her sister Mrs Perry. Crum Mr and Mrs Lou Kennedy are also named in these local notices.
Three persons were killed and three injured when a fire truck collided with an automobile and rammed it through a show window in Houston on Thursday night. Police and fire officials investigated the collision as a line of witnesses gathered at the scene, with emergency crews treating the injured and securing the area. The accident halted traffic and prompted warnings for motorists to avoid the district until investigators finish.
