Cedar Rapids Democrat Anthony Scolaro collected 6359 signatures to abolish the three district system for Linn County supervisors. Republican directors Emmons and Henderson refused to act. The county attorney may pass judgment on the petitions while 2029 rural signatures seek retention.

Steal Liquor From Griswold Legion Club
Griswold police and Legion officials seek who took fourteen liquor bottles from the Griswold American Legion club over two weeks. Eight bottles were stolen December 29 and six on December 22 from the club bar top and basement door with a tire iron. The bottles were marked for resale by the Iowa liquor commission. No forced entry was found after the first theft.

Recluse Maurice Stump Found Dead With Shotgun
The isolationist Maurice Howard Stump, 39, was found dead in a vacant house five miles west of Des Moines with a 12 gauge shotgun. Police said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot, a forked stick in his right hand used to fire the weapon, and identified the act as suicide.
