R. J. Cornell arrived from Wiota to assume duties as the News Telegraphs city editor. Former Wiota Record editor and former schools superintendent, Cornell is praised for news sense and sociability. The paper asks readers to share items and support the city’s best paper.
The board of super supervisors opened its January session with a long agenda ahead over several days. City officials report changes in the night police force while residents note New Year visits and family reunions. George Towne and family visit, while Henry Marehall resigns as night watchman and D H Engleman steps in. The Chas yiock family reunion marks thirty six years since Chas Block and Son began business in the city.
The News Telegraph announces the consolidation of the News and the Telegraph into Atlantic's single paper. W H Wiseman exits. C F Chase and B H Chase lead the new venture with C I Chase as editor and E P Chase as business manager. The paper will cover six days, raise ad rates, manage subscriptions from both papers, and pledge impartial, comprehensive local coverage to about 3,000 homes. The tone is promotional, stressing accountability to readers and no political party allegiance.
The Simson Ladies Glee Club, about twenty members, performed at the Methodist church last evening to widespread praise. Director Henderson let the group carry the program, producing a polished recital highlighted by the Indian themed Chant of Victory and strong individual numbers. Kathryn Vollmar's piano work earned special thanks as the group prepares to tour Shelby, Harlan, Carroll, Dennison and other locales.
Chas. Cardio, who recently bought a game end in Arkansas, plans to travel soon to prepare it for this year's drop. John may accompany him to rough it for a time, health permitting.
A hired black team from Petit & Baxter livery ran off on the railroad after the driver left to fetch his overcoat. The horses fell through a bridge opening. one was killed and a second badly injured. The west bound local train was delayed. the owners pledged to make good the damages.
Assessors of the county hold their annual session alongside the board of supervisors at the court house to arrange classification for livestock work this year. Practically all assessors from various localities attend.
Whitney Loan and Trust Company throws open its splendid new six story bank building on Chestnut street. The Giffen furniture store occupies the corner side while the bank houses private offices, tellers cages, vaults for safety deposits and money on deposit, and a directors room. The interior features mahogany finish, tiled floors, concealed lighting, and a steam heating plant by Salisbury. Franklin H. Whitney founded the firm, noted for square dealing and city leadership, as the institution looks to continued growth in its new quarters.
