Des Moines reports cigarette revenue for last month fell about 69 000 from the prior month with January total at 343 602.45, though up about 82 000 from January last year. Beer receipts rose about 134 000 from January 1947, totaling 267 663.84 as the tax hike from July 1947 took effect.
Cedar Rapids report on Bernard Iddings Bell addressing 100 ministers and wives at Coe College. Bell, Episcopal canon and religious-education consultant, warned that pastors risk career trouble if they rely on an ailing church. He said America and Cedar Rapids are not Christian and urged a new reformation due to outdated church methods.
Dr. C. M. McConnell of the Boston School of Theology told about 300 Iowa Protestant ministers that Protestants should shift from denominational promotion to wider coop eration. He urged Catholics Mormons and Jews to join in unified effort to strengthen the kingdom of God.
Cedar Rapids speakers urged farmers to seed forage crops regularly and rotate them with corn to preserve field fertility. Maurice Heath of the Ames soil conservation nursery warned 800 farmers at the grassland conference that without forage crops fertility declines, while Prof. C. W. McDonald contributed to the discussion.
State college said experiments demonstrated an average of about 11 bushels of corn per head could be used by cattle fattened in the pastures, compared to those fed in feed lots.
A pocket size safety booklet titled The Driver Guides' Guide was distributed to every library and school in the state. The Bureau of Standards will test B Lo anti freeze made in Iowa City and pace a prompt report. Donald B. Brooks said no tests had been made yet at the federal trade commission request due to insufficient sample. An extra batch arrived this week for analysis.
