The chimpanzee Ham is taken to a Redstone rocket for a Project Mercury test flight. He reaches 155 miles altitude and travels 420 miles down the Atlantic missile range before being recovered three hours after launch from Cape Canaveral.
At Cape Canaveral the chimp Ham signaled a go ahead for human spaceflight after a Redstone launch. Ham endured 155 miles altitude and 430 miles downrange into the Atlantic, experiencing seven minutes of weightlessness and required lever actions to avoid shocks. NASA notes the test paves way for a human orbital effort.
COUNCIL BLUFFS AP two men, Decker and Norman, each won $2000 fines and three years probation after pleading no defense to charges of false statements in securing FHA loans. Seven counts were dismissed on recommendation of the U.S. District judge.
Pine City Minnesota AP reports a roving cattle buyer linked to check forgeries and the deaths of his two wives. Authorities traced the man after a Georgia divorcee warned sheriff with a letter. The suspect had served time for molesting two girls and faced checks charges in two counties.
The House passed a 217 to 212 vote to enlarge the Rules Committee from 12 to 15, shifting control toward liberals and signaling a long fight to push President Kennedy’s legislative program. Kennedy approved the move, which adds two Democrats and one Republican, with 10 Democrats to 5 Republicans on the panel.
A million Pakistanis welcomed Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip as they arrived in Karachi for a 16 day state visit. The royal couple will travel to India and then Nepal during the tour.

The Mason City firm Wallace and Holland Engineering attended and reported on preliminary work for a proposed zoning ordinance to be presented to the county board later this year. The ordinance aims for orderly growth county wide except agriculture, and will not require farmers to obtain permits for farm buildings. A public meeting schedule will follow as the ordinance is prepared for approval. The next zoning meeting is Feb 27 at 7:30 p.m.
The Ottumwa City Council authorized a 1,150,000 bond issue to complete the Des Moines River flood control project.
The Iowa Commerce Commission will hear Railway Express Agency Inc on March 1 in Hampton regarding two express routes from Iowa Falls. One route would serve Hampton and the other Eldora.
Davenport AP reports Scott County Clerk Elmer Jens proposes a state law to raise Iowa marriage ages from 14 to 16 for girls and 16 to 18 for boys to stop out of state couples from marrying in Iowa. He notes many such couples travel from Wisconsin Illinois and Indiana and says Iowa girls under 16 could marry only with parental consent and a doctor's certificate in pregnancy cases.
Cape Canaveral reports the Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile achieved a successful first flight. All three stages fired, guidance worked, and the rocket landed in the south Atlantic 4000 miles from launch. Officials call it a major step toward rapid buildup and battlefield readiness by mid 1962.
The John N. Thompson family left their furnished home at night with two young sons who attended McDonogh 19 amid white parent protests. Thompson, 33, said by phone they were leaving on the first train, but gave no destination. Neighbors reported minimal belongings and unreturned calls.
The House approved a bill 94-2 to rename the Cedar Falls institution State College of Iowa, aligning with plans to grant liberal arts degrees to non teachers and altering the college's identity pending Senate approval.
Sioux City AP reports Gust Drosos, 65, facing murder charges for the Sept. 7 slaying of George D. Pappas, 32, an assistant county attorney. The case stems from a will dispute two years prior. the defense began presenting testimony after Pappas testified to the will. Drosos was left about 2141 from an estate valued at 63434, with Pappas as a will witness.
