Two aircraft collide during a test flight high above Van Nuys California. Seven people are dead and 78 injured as the airliner crashes into a crowded schoolyard scattering debris. A jet fighter participates in the midair collision during final test runs.
In Van Nuys California a protest grows against testing airplanes over populated areas following a flaming crash into a schoolyard. Representative Edgar W Hiest R California calls for an immediate investigation and asks tests over Los Angeles be halted pending regulation review.
A transport aircraft broke apart over Pacoima Junior High School injuring many seventh graders and killing four aboard along with the pilot. The disaster prompted calls in Washington for investigation and stricter flight safety over populated regions.
Dr. William C. Menninger accused Iowa hospitals of atrocious administrative practices and urged shifting funds to buy better care. He criticized county homes and called for a major state mental health program with capital and operating budgets aimed at research and staff training.

Four armed men robbed the Libbey Owens Ford federal credit union in Toledo, taking about fifty thousand dollars. Albert Gottfried, the credit union manager, said the bandits ordered money from Brinks and emptied six cash registers before fleeing in a car after severing telephone lines. witnesses noted a driver remained in the vehicle.
Daniele Alberghetti, a cellist and musical director, died at his Hollywood home from brain cancer. He guided his daughter Anna Marie Alberghetti to stardom as a child singer and helped her launch a concert career before her 1950 Hollywood debut.

A searing blaze engulfed Grace Methodist Church on the Morningside College campus in Sioux City. No injuries reported though about 30 people were in the church. losses unofficially reach 300000 with $175000 insured on the 50 year old brick building. Firefighters battled flames through the night as one wall and the bell tower remained standing while debris spread over the area.
Beulah Bruff Hinshaw, former Atlantic resident and daughter of late Atlantic attorney James B. Bruff, died in El Paso Texas on January 19. She had lived in Minnesota before moving to El Paso to live with a sister. Surviving are two sons a sister Mrs Anna Bruff Fletcher of El Paso and two brothers Joe C Bruff and Dr William Bruff of Whittier California. Another brother Russell Bruff a Whit tier junior college professor died last October.
The Soviet government accused the United States of accelerating war preparations and expanding foreign bases to equip with atomic weapons. Tass distributed the statement, noting Western delay tactics at the United Nations and citing Eisenhower Eden and Mollet replies to Soviet disarmament proposals. It urged a Big Power conference, while blaming the West for a lack of cooperation.
Iowa's 1956 corn under government price support reached 58,204,000 bushels by mid January, more than doubling the previous measure. Soybeans under support stood at 16,248,800 bushels, with officials noting demand may push corn support past the 1955 record of 123,800,000 bushels by the May 31 deadline. State ASC chairman Max M. Soeth said soybean support close to the 1954 record, and the soybean program period had just closed.
Budget Director Percival F. Brundage told the House Appropriations Committee that at the current rate of repayment the national debt would take 59 years to wipe out starting July 1, 2008, with an estimated $270.6 billion debt by June next year. The committee also offered its own estimate, suggesting 93 to 144 years would be required.
