Earl Caddock, world heavyweight wrestling champion, tested holds with mules and pitchforks at Camp Dodge Ia. He began duty with the Eighty eighth division, serving as a stable policeman. He recounts his first night in a soldier’s bunk and a noisy guard walking nearby.
John F. Cornell, son of Ars. Mary Cornell, a recruit at Great Lakes naval station north of Chicago, praises the city for supporting Uncle Sam’s soldiers and sailors. A World War I era letter from Ralph Roberts dated November 27 1917 written to Mr P Chase in Atlantic Iowa describes a near Atlantic crossing with censoring and safety first motto. The writer recalls predeparture camp nightPacked blankets kept warm fires burning in tents late at night as soldiers wrote letters home prior to departure. The text shows censorship and testy handwriting with garbled lines and missing passages.
