He served with the 18th Infantry in tanks and completed thirty one days of trench service. His eardrums were ruptured by a nearby 14 inch shell explosion.

Yorktown Ta Dec 14 Ed Nelson a farmer near College Springs was killed while sawing wood at his home. Helpers saw him beside the engine after the accident and four doctors failed to save him. He was unconscious with a deep facial wound.
