Rock Island engineer dies after freight accident

Robert Mead freight engineer on the Rock Island died in a Stuart hospital after being struck by a started locomotive at Casey. He lived at Valley Junction and left a wife. The fatal incident occurred while he was between Valley Junction and Council Bluffs.

Girl accidentally shot by companion in Walnut

In Walnut on December 12 Edith Coffman a 14 year old girl sustained a severe but not dangerous wound from a 22 caliber rifle mishandled by her 10 year old companion Louis Pedersen The injury occurred while the children played at a neighbor's home and the girl was to be taken to an Omaha hospital. Ernest Jennings is arrested in Pottawattamie county for auto theft and is in Avoca jail awaiting grand jury action. The car was later found in a garage at Atchison Kansas.

Explosion on Brooklyn Kills Six Injures Thirty in Yokohama

Six men on the armored cruiser Brooklyn were killed and thirty wounded in a coal dust explosion aboard the ship while coaling in Yokohama Japan. Leonard C Carter of Muscatine was among the wounded. The navy reports came from the Asiatic fleet commander. The M C P club will hold a breakfast at Smiley's store Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

State troops to operate cars in Omaha strike

Thomas Hall, chairman of the Nebraska state railway commission, notified Gordon W. Wattes, president of the Omaha & Council Bluffs Street Railway, that street car service should continue despite the strike. Local authorities were urged to maintain order while cars run, and if unable, the governor should be asked to aid.
