The state council of national defense will hold a conservation loyalty meeting in Des Moines on December 14 with noted speakers including Otto H. Kahn Tu P O Connor Senator Knute Nelson and Clarence Dartow. Special patriotic music will be provided and invitations issued to all organizations to bring members. The two day event aims to mobilize war support and attendees are urged to participate.
New subscribers can receive The Des Moines Daily Register free through year end with a subscription. The promotion covers from now to January 1, 1919, at a price of 34.00. The Register is the only morning paper in Central Iowa and is published the same morning at no extra cost compared to evening papers.
Clarence Richardson, editor's son, enlisted in the Engineer Department after Thanksgiving at Omaha. He is stationed at Fort Logan Colorado and may be reassigned soon, while the family faces temporary linotype duties and hopes for his safe return. Washington reports that declaring war on Austria Hungary will add about 700,000 men over age 15 to the alien enemies in the United States. Census figures show 675,080 male subjects of Austria Hungary in 1910 and 186,524 former subjects who had sworn allegiance and were becoming naturalized. The total alien count would rise to over one million.

The fifty second annual convention of the Iowa State Horticultural Society opens tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Des Moines with sessions lasting three days ending with an illustrated lecture. The program features talks and discussions by state horticulturists and includes apple experts from the U S Department of Agriculture. A note highlights a Fred Alexander display of educational children’s books.
Elk Horn Iowa report notes Mrs. Soren Jensen mother of nineteen children with four sons in the army. Her family once lived in Elk Horn and now resides in Tacoma Washington. Jensen previously ran a store in Elk Horn and later farmed nearby.
Kimballton Indiana resident Hans C. Hansen earned a net profit of 19000 on a land parcel near Standard. He bought the land years ago at 20 per acre and added 5000 in improvements, selling the land recently at 60 per acre. The profit reflects the selling price minus the original cost and improvements. Former Kimballton residents now live near Standard. Dr Haley opens a dental office in the Opera House block.
Griswold asserts Cass County pride with record corn husking by two Griswold girls. Miss Clara Webeler husked seventy six bushels in one day while Emma and Tena Kuester together reached fifty bushels in two and a half hours, challenging Coin’s claimed honors.

John Lawson, a farmer south of Griswold, uses oil lamps in his corn crib to drive moisture from the corn. He reports the method very satisfactory, with the corn in good condition after cribbing, though he removes soft ears during sorting.
Raymond Graham of Des Molines and son of insurance man Chris Graham passed the aviation service enlistment exam in Omaha. Paul Defler, nephew of M. C. Cardio, plans to enlist in Chicago after leaving his clerk position at the Cardio hotel. Iowa residents gain week ending December 8 1917 as reported by Burges & Sturges patent attorneys. John L Pascal of Fort Fort town is listed with a fog holed item while Alfred N Olsen of Rock Rapids is noted for a rodent insect screen frame machine for forming concrete sewer pipes.
