Bitter anti Havner fight to loom in Iowa 1918 primaries

Louis H. Cook, political forecaster, predicts Havner will face strong opposition at the June 1918 Iowa primaries. Iowa Called On For 1200 Men For Navy

Iowa has furnished 2200 men for the navy since April 7 1917. Navy plans 60000 more recruits and Iowa is asked to supply 1200. An order lets drafted men enlist after December 15 with exemption board proof they are not needed in the army. Iowa to provide 80 apprentice seamen 200 firemen and 200 mechanics cooks bakers electricians and telegraphers.

Government to pay veterans dependents under wartime plan

A government program offers lifelong compensation to permanently disabled soldiers and monthly payments to widows, children, or dependent mothers of those killed in action. The policy applies whether or not soldiers have war risk insurance and includes federal insurance on death plus continuation of current coverage until individual policies take effect.
