Cerro Gordo county will display a 2000 star service flag at the North Iowa Fair in Mason City on August 12. Gov. Narding is expected to unfurl the banner during a patriotic address marking the county’s army of liberty quota.

Shelby County Fair in Harlan will feature seven auto races on August 21 with $2,000 in purses. Races sanctioned by the International Motor Contest Association promise a speed carnival rivaling the area, with events ranging from three to twenty miles.
Washington Aug 1 The House Ways and Means Committee approved a federal graduated excise tax on automobile use ranging from 10 dollars for cars under 600 dollars to 60 dollars for 3000 dollar cars with 20 dollars for each 500 dollars over 3000. The tax targets owners while a 10 percent garage sale tax and 65 percent gross sales tax on auto trucks will hit manufacturers and importers. A 2 cent per gallon gasoline production tax and a 5 dollar annual motorcycle use tax were also approved.
